Removable Hard Drive Kits (Mobile Racks)
Turn your internal hard drive into a removable, hot swappable hard drive!

What is a mobile rack?
A mobile rack makes it easy to turn your internal hard drive into one that can be removed from your computer quickly, easily, and securely. Mobile racks are usually quite inexpensive, costing just around $30. They are made up of two parts: a bay insert, and a drawer that houses your hard drive and slides into and out of the bay insert.

Why would someone want to remove their hard drive?

  • Transport Files/Programs Between Home and Work. A removable hard drive enables you to take your work home with you, no problem. It eliminates the need to copy files to a floppy/zip disk, which in turn eliminates potential problems such as running out of space on your disk, or inadvertently leaving behind a critical file. In addition, you'll never face the dilemma of being unable to open a work document at home because you don't have the right program installed on your home computer.

A removable hard drive eliminates all of these problems and improves your efficiency by enabling troublefree transport of files and programs between computers.

  • Back Up Important Information. A removable hard drive is a fast and convenient way to back up your hard drive. Insert the removable hard drive into your case and transfer your files.

  • Archive files and important documents. Store important documents that you need, but rarely use, on a removable hard drive. This is a great way to keep them safe without taking up space on your primary hard drive.

  • Minimize downtime. Removable hard drives are indespensible when it comes to mission critical computers, such as servers. When a company's server goes down it often results in lost productivity, business, and revenue. A mobile rack can save your company precious minutes by making it possible to quickly replace the failed drive with a back up.

Save your old drive
Today, quality hard drives are more reliable than ever, and their lifespans longer. Next time you upgrade your computer, consider hanging onto your old hard drive and using it for back up or a special purpose such as storing digital photos, or gaming. In addition, many people prefer to use an alternative hard drive to download material off the Internet since such material can sometimes contain viruses.

Installation
It is important to understand that you will need to install the mobile rack's "drive bay insert" into the computers you wish to transfer the hard drive between. Installation is not very difficult but requires an open 5.25" drive bay in your computer case. However, mobile racks that connect to a USB port and remain external, also exist. Currently these cost approximately $100 or more.

*Special Note about Windows XP
Due to the "Product Activation" anti-piracy feature on Microsoft's new operating system, Windows XP, hard drives with Windows XP installed cannot be mobilized.
